It's 2:30 p.m. and a Waffle House worker going home from her job jumps aboard a small, gray shuttle that's slowly trolling for riders along Buford Highway. A MARTA bus, No. 39, is running the same route, but she opts for "The Gray," her nickname for a private bus service that has more than 60,000 riders monthly on its route from the Lindbergh to the Doraville MARTA stations. The Gray's riders, the majority of them Hispanic, say they love the customer service they get from the private shuttle service, which is known formally as Royal Bus Lines. They use it instead of Atlanta's public transit to run errands, go to work, visit friends or collect kids from day care. The company's founder is Carlos Ochoa, a 43-year-old Colombian entrepreneur with 15 years experience driving for Coach USA in Miami. When he transferred to Atlanta, he immediately saw an opportunity for better bus service along Buford Highway, Atlanta's international corridor. "Atlanta is growing so fast and needs more services, especially for Hispanics," Ochoa said. "Eighty percent of my riders are Hispanic. We are faster, cheaper and we speak both languages. If MARTA's not on time, people decide to go with me." Starting with one minibus, the Alpharetta resident began driving the route in August 2001, and for one week, he offered free rides. "The bus was packed," he said. But business almost dried up after he started charging fares. So he began explaining to people what he was doing, advertising in Hispanic newspapers and passing out fliers. Now, Ochoa serves 60,000 riders monthly along the highway that passes El Mustachio Bar & Grill, a 99 cent SuperCenter, the International Farmer's Market, Asian Square and Plaza Fiesta. It also generates revenue from advertising that appears on the buses. Ochoa now has nine buses and offers more than 15 hours of service daily, with buses running at 10- to 12-minute intervals from 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
