The White Liberal Historian And His Negro Progressive Intellectual Friend Who Is A Racism Chaser And Is Pleased By The Definition Of "The Blacks" As Victims

C-SPAN: Complexion Of Race In America

This morning when I woke up and turned on the television I caught the tail end of the video above, which is presented in its entirety.

A woman from the audience asks the author Daniel Shaferstien a question that prompts him to define RACE in America.  (See the 50:52 mark in the video)   Sharfstein is heard providing a definition of "race" - from the perspective of "White Privilege" and "Black Oppression".  While the balance of American history no doubt is about this very conflict - this DOES NOT define the whole of the experience of the Black American.

It does allow us to look what is in the mind of NY Times opinion writer Brent Staples and note the commonality that he has with Sharfstein - that Black people are a FUNCTION of our relationship with Whites.

Sharfstein's Answer As To What "RACE" Is (and implicitly, what Black people are):

"It's less important to talk about race and drops of blood and more important to talk about RACISM and INEQUALITY. So, we can think of Blackness in terms of Black blood but plenty of white people have Black blood too.  So where does this leave us in terms of what race is?  And I think that what we are left with is race as a crude marker of discrimination and a bare proxy for hierarchy.

W.E.B. Du Bois was asked "What is a Black man" and the answer is "A Black man is who has to ride the Jim Crow car through Georgia".  And I think that shifting our focus toward discrimination and inequality is.....  We supposedly live in a POST RACIAL SOCIETY but as long as that inequality exists and that discrimination exists then race exists.

 ANALYSIS

When I make my samplings of the world and then express my views - the comments and reactions from other people show that we are "two ships passing in the night", each having heard two different things.

I am not challenging any of the historical assertions that Mr Sharfstein has presented.  It is well recorded fact that "the color line" had been enforced using brutal means and that many quadroons and octoroon "passed" if they possibly could, in order to take advantage of the White privilege.

My problem with Mr Sharfstein's definition of RACE in terms of "Inequality" and "Discrimination" is that this definition goes exclusively to the "White/Black" conflict over time and necessarily strips the unique face of Blackness, making us all "faceless VICTIMS" that need to be serviced by some future lot of White people who will be more committed to "equality" and "non-discrimination".  As such I hear a larger agenda in his analysis (the organic carrot of "social justice").

From my formative years in college I heard from my peers and the Black Studies crowd that:
  • Black people are a "spiritual people"
  • Music is central to the essence of Black people, the connector to our African ancestors
  • Black people are not "soul-less" as are Whites and won't initiate a World War that would trigger killings of 10s of millions of people
  • No other people would have survived the active effort to destroy them as a people.  We are a strong people
Where is any of this character that defines Black people to be found in the characterization of Sharfstein as we are rendered as mere functions of "inequality" and "discrimination" from Whites?

I am fully aware that this type of thinking is present in many Black Progressives as they USE the Black Struggle to achieve the "Post Racial Social Justice" dream, despite their snarls at "Post Racial" as a concept.  When the National Urban League makes WHITE FOLKS their "perfect 1.0 reference" they show that they have bought into Sharfstein's definition.

It is clear that Brent Staples is in concurrence with the notion that Black people are defined with reference to "inequality and discrimination" as compared with White Folks.   I was waiting for him to rise up out of his chair and confront Sharfstein on his definition.  Instead he accommodatively closed the discussion as the C-SPAN imposed time limit on the broadcast was reached.

Then I Looked At The List Of Articles From Brent Staples

To the Black Quasi-Socialist Progressive-Fundamentalist Racism Chasers, like Brent Staples -----

  • It does not matter "How many Ninjas Get Themselves Kilt" by "Street Pirates who are Black"
  • It does not matter how many "Favorable People Are In Power" over the institutions in "Mission Accomplished Cities" that are failing to develop Black people
  • It doesn't matter how much implicit economic obligations to produce jobs and prosperity that should be assumed after an election victory of people who compelled "The Least Of These" to invest their ballots
It seems, from my analysis, that the SUPERIOR issue that trumps all superficial notions of power achieved through political conquest through attrition is the notion of White Supremacy.  The White man need not be the mayor and the city council majority for him to still "run things" in a city full of Black folks.

At some point it is necessary for us to move beyond the presumption of the White man at the top of the mountain, able to shift the center of gravity of economic production out of the political boundaries that he has vacated and instead make note of the psychological associations that are in place within the minds of the people who now occupy the seats of power in the place that used to be prosperous.

Failing to start with this psychological analysis is a grave mistake.  It will allow you to get caught up in the elaborate historical narratives  while never noting that the "Negroes in Georgia in 2012 ride AMTRAK as it goes north to Washington DC or south to New Orleans. "  The "Jim Crow Train" now sits rusting in a museum.

It appears that it was not important for Mr Stephens to update the words from W.E.B. Du Bois, used by Mr Sharfstein to characterize "What A Black Man" is, showing that clearly Dr Du Bois' reference is incorrect because despite the fact that today's Negro is allowed to sit where he wants on the train, bus or airplane - this definition still defines us per our OPPRESSION.

I believe that it serves Mr Stephens agenda and those with a like mind to leave the definition of the Black man in terms of how Du Bois' world had been cast.

Based on his archive of articles, Mr Stephens' work is quite pleasing to his employers at the NY Times as he scours the nation looking for examples of racial discrimination against "The Blacks".

It is when we apply the "Dark Matter Analysis" - which dares to make a more holistic analysis of "What Ails The Negro On This Day Of Our Lord" that we see so many of the forces that go unseen among the "Paid Blacks" in the media but which have a serious detrimental impact on this INEQUALITY that is now the key talking point among the Progressive-Fundamentalists as it renders the societal indictment that they ultimately seek.

The ultimate flaw of Mr Stephens, Michelle Alexander (my book report on "The New Jim Crow" is coming soon) and others who think as they do is that they are unable to tie the PRESENT obligations for the Black community to govern our communities and manage our resources - in preparation for ADVANTAGE IN THE NEXT interval of time because they are so much more interested in using the injuries that we received and are purported to still suffer with from the PREVIOUS INTERVALS OF TIME.    Their goal is not to develop Black people by developing a comprehensive set of institutions and protections that emanate from the Black community and which are applied to the Black community.  Instead they wish to use the "Plight Of The Negro" to impress upon the formal government that the "Negro need protection" from further molestation.

In summary - there is no "Organic Molestation" that the Negro is competent of rendering upon his own kind.

It is not possible to achieve a CONSCIOUS state of equality until the "Black Inferiorist" Black Progressive Public Intellectual accepts that Black people are "100% Equal Human Beings", that we are able to do good and evil - separate and distinct from our relationship with WHITE FOLKS and the GOVERNMENT.

From this we will see an abatement of the usurpation of our people as we are engaged in political campaigns for the expressed benefit of their "Progressive-Fundamentalist Multilateral Commission" but not centrally for the development of our people.  Having achieved previous political power in the constant battle with their ideological enemies - they have left in their wake - smouldering piles of carnage and yet have the audacity to ask Black people to stay the course, following behind them.    From this vantage point few know if the putrid odor that those who are following behind the leader is coming from the piles of dead potential that is on the ground around their own communities or if this leader has a flatulence problem, pointing to the contents of his digestive tracts that his scheme for "Black Congregational Unity" is FULL OF.

From The Narrative Of MSNBC: Minority neighborhoods hits hardest as budget woes stymie efforts to make banks pay

We should stop being fooled into believing that the antics which successfully pacifies Black people in our present prevailing consciousness as being "The Problem" that plagues our communities versus what can be more scientifically proven as "The Problem" that seems to suppress our growth despite making gains via the methodology that has been set out for us to follow in "The Struggle".

When you understand that "Progressivism Is INORGANIC" and cannot develop people by compelling them to submit themselves into an order that is deemed "conservative and traditional" so that greater gains might be had then you will understand that its trademark quest for "Social Justice" and the recast claims of "Inequality" and "Injustice" merely seeks to have Progressivism avoid accountability for failing to produce promised results in the "Mission Accomplished Zones", but instead it as an organized scheme is merely setting its sights on a more nationalized goal, allowing it to retain its foot soldiers in the struggle.

One day its most loyal supporters will see that this train has no tracks to run on.
That the motion that they had been feeling comes from "Occupiers" that are outside of the train, rocking it too and fro and then their protest signs are moving in a manner past their windows to give the appearance that the train itself is moving forward when only the signage of protest are in motion.
