From the recent article from Ta-Nehisi Coates
The tactic of rebutting a legitimate charge of racism by taking loud and oafish offense is not simplythe tactic of David Yerushalmi, but of ridiculous bigots in general. We've seen this tack taken over the years by everyone from Geraldine Ferraro to Rush Limbaugh. The practice is indeed as old as slaveholding white supremacists insisting that the abolitionists would make slaves of white.
One thing I've never seen is a bigot cite actual racism as a defense against their own racism. Enter the bizarre case of Barbara Espinosa, a right-wing radio host in Arizona who said the following of Barack Obama:
"I don't believe in calling him the first black president," she said, "I voted for the white guy myself. I call him a monkey."
When confronted with the fact that what she said might be racist Espinosa insisted that
"with a last name of Espinosa I'm anything but racist." She then rather spectacularly claimed that she was referring to a cartoon, as though this were a defense. You can click through at your peril. Suffice to say it's merely a Google image search of cartoons depicting Obama as a monkey.
I don't even know how one begins to follow that logic. It's worth noting that the head of the Arizona GOP was a guest on the show when the monkey remark was made. The gentleman stayed silent through the entire exchange, intervening only to denounce Obama as a "national sickness."
As a footnote, I need to say that it has been pointed out that cataloging racism is a sight below the standards of this blog. I sort of agree. But over the course of the Obama presidency I have become convinced that no single force exerts a greater pull on his presidency than white racism. Not white resentment. Not white populism. White racism. I don't know how else to explain a health care denounced as reparations, the rather continuous disrespect, the sense that he is a Kenyan illegitimate or all of the attendant theories. I do not know how else to explain a state like West Virginia, arguably the most racist in the country, where delegates are now refusing to endorse the president.
There will be more on this in the coming months. I don't want to scoop myself. But my point is I can only stop talking about racism, when it ceases to be a significant force in our politics. When the mere act of being white gives Obama's opponent "a home-state advantage nationally," I can't stop. It would be deeply wrong to stop.
| US Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney: The words and views of Roger Taney "“In the opinion of the court, the legislation and histories of the times, and the language used in the Declaration of Independence, show, that neither the class of persons who had been imported as slaves, nor their descendants, whether they had become free or not, were then acknowledged as a part of the people, nor intended to be included in the general words used in that memorable instrument...They had for more than a century before been regarded as beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations; and so far inferior, that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect; and that the negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit." |
Ta-Nehisi Coates' Argument Mandates That The Talking Point Which Says "Black People Don't Have POWER To Be RACISTS" Has Been Necessarily Retired In Respect To The Present President Of The United States And The US Attorney General. Mr Coates' Arguments Provide Comfort To Conscious, Progressive Black People Who Note That We Are Not Living In A "Post Racial Society" As He Affirms This By Showing The POWER OF ONE "WHITE HISPANIC" WOMAN To Insult A BLACK MAN WHO IS PRESIDENT By Keying In On His Race And The Racist Slander That Black People Have Endured As Such . Mr Coates Hopes That You Will Focus On His Sales Pitch Which Argues That A Black Man Still Has The Burden Of His Race To Carry Around And Will Not Be Judged Based Upon The Merits Of His Policies And Competency In The Position. The Previous Notions Of SYSTEMATIC RACISM And Its Impact On INDIVIDUAL Blacks Has Now Been Shifted Over To The Impact Of RACISM Upon BLACK PEOPLE WHO ARE NOW OPERATIVES IN THE SYSTEM. |
ANALYSIS
It is strange why the issue of opposition to "Health Care For The Least Of These" is reduced to a factional sentiment that "ObamaCare is 'REPARATIONS' ". I would think that a brilliant mind like Ta-Nehisi Coates would talk down a more intellectually curious path and ask why, at least from a Black perspective, the dominate increase in control over schools and institutions where Black people live has not translated into a bumper crop of Black people trained professionally in the medical arts. One would think that Morehouse and Meharry would now be bursting at the seams with Black candidates that have matriculated through the feeder schools, as evidence that "The Struggle" for quality education - after the progressive take over - has overcome the suppressive force that was upon our people's collective necks.
Instead what we are staring at, per this new found focus in the daily "care and condition" of the President Of The United States and US Attorney General is the truth which indicates that the Black Progressive Political struggle up the ladder was only ever erected to have Black people focused upon "living vicariously through these officials, enlisting in their fights. This investment of our attention comes at the expense of us keying in, in an UNBOUGHT, UNSOLD, UN-DISTRACTED, UN-PACIFIED manner in the actual receipt of what we initiated "The Struggle" to receive.
Mr Coates and other Progressive-Fundamentalist operatives fully understand: IF they were to actually base their arguments WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY - focusing upon OUR CONDITION and not WHAT PLEASES OR ANGERS BLACK PEOPLE in our present CONSCIOUS CONDITION.........they would be forced to self-expose themselves as the "Narrators Of Distraction" that they are. I conclude that they are not going to stop. The Black community must express its own dignity and worth and stop this (racism chasing) foolishness by showing that the focus on direct governance and management of OUR CONDITION is superior to POLITICS that is far, far away.
While the article by Mr Coates in which the Black Progressives' feelings have been hurt over the number of direct and suspected "racial references" made to the "First Black President" has been syndicated by several Black blogs - not one of them has pointed out the irony contained within.
(Note: I am watching "Obama's Rolex Watch With Roland 'Thurgood' Martin" in which Holder and Obama are routinely referenced as the "Black AG/ President. It seems that racial trafficking of Obama/Holder when it is affirmative is never a problem. Only when critics make use of racial references does the Black Progressive and their White Progressive Cheshire Foxes get bent out of shape.)
It comes as no surprise that Mr Coates can't bring himself to see that this same "Black President" who is under attack from the "White Right Wing" who can't see past his "inferior race" is also the same "Black Commander In Chief" that has enough INSTITUTIONAL POWER to order the US Imperialistic Military Command to kill people of color:
- In Pakistan
- In Afghanistan
- In Yemen
- In Libya
- In Somalia
The irony is that while there are few references to "White Racists" refusing to fight for "this Black man" - we need to look into the ranks of the PROGRESSIVES to note the virtual silence in their Anti-War Activity. This is NOT DUE TO OBAMA'S RACE. This is due to their own IDEOLOGICAL BIGOTRY in which they are seen compromising themselves and what they believe so they "don't give their conservative enemy ammunition" as they see discord in the ranks of the left.
("We Refuse To Protest Against This PROGRESSIVE Commander In Chief Who Is Bring Us Domestic Social Justice" - is their bigoted complimentary stance to that of the White Conservative bigot. With this disposition it is the American Military Machine that scores a victory. This same machine that they stood against for so long.).
We are never going to hear Ta-Nehisi Coates or any other Black Progressive-Fundamentalist journalist or blogger give a rationalization of the notion of Obama's "Black Inferiority" per his suceptibility to "racist" attack versus Obama's full faith and authority as Commander In Chief to launch attacks using American government INSTITUTIONS that follow his command. Since their analysis of Obama's enemies is done to produce an INDICTMENT - they choose to avoid such "self-introspection" that might cause them to come clean about their own bigotry.
Claims of Obama's Inferiority per his Blackness is not for these propagandists to provide an accurate analysis of Obama's"weakened presidential stature" due to RACISM. It is only a part of their personal "Vicarious Living Through Obama" in which they themselves are incensed that their enemies are making such references as they understand how the claim of racism is a great comforter to the Progressive-Fundamentalist's consciousness who can't see why everyone is not more appreciative of all that they have reminded us of the great things that Obama has done. Again, as I mention above we see above that Mr Coates cannot think of any other possible way to increase health care coverage at reduced costs aside from a central planning model. The thought of using our local institutions to achieve this end - never came to mind as it would be cataloged as "Blaming the victim for his failure to produce more graduates".
This is the same type of thinking that recently brought us "Anti-NATO" Protests in Chicago, as the Anti-War Progressives were compelled to protest against the expanded American presence in the Middle East and Africa BUT to remain careful not to protest against Commander In Chief Obama specifically. Despite the fact that all of the drones that are dropping bombs are from the US Military or the US CIA - they understood the power of "image shaping" in their protests.
Please be clear it was not RACIAL BIGOTRY or racial protectionism on behalf of Obama that caused them to shift their protests from Obama. This is a case of IDEOLOGICAL BIGOTRY as they understand that they are "Anti-Dr Kings". They do not wish to imperil their Domestic Social Justice scheme by promoting "Injustice Everywhere" above it.

It appears that one of Mr Coates' unspoken mandates for his lofty position at "The Atlantic" is that he understand his limits of his employ.
Please recall that just after the American bombing of the African nation of Libya - Mr Coates (and Earl Ofari Hutchinson) felt the motivation to attack The Nation Of Islam and Minister Louis Farrakhan over their past dealings with Gaddafi. In his previous musings Mr Coates felt no compulsion to affirm the veracity of President Obama's claims that this was a "Humanitarian Mission" as the sovereign government of Libya attempted to suppress a rebellion in its ranks. Instead he believed that it was in his interests to provide cover for the "Black Commander In Chief" per his own satisfaction.
At a time when there is a near indistinguishable fusion between "The Black Community Consciousness" and the "American Political Machine" per the constant streaming messages from operatives like Mr Coates - few people dare to step back and consider the present coordinates of the Black people "In The Struggle".
NOTE: Mr Coates' comments against Farrahkan were presented in the context of a critical piece against Republican primary contestant Ron Paul. Coates used Farrakhan as the model of a "public kook" to make the point that Ron Paul is serving that purpose. While it is more accurate for me to say that Hutchinson attacked the NOI directly for its linkages with Libya...........the response from the NOI as penned in "The Final Call" was the same: The NOI accused both Hutchinson and Coates for (their words) "Serving their Jewish Masters". My slightly revised assertion against Mr Coates is that he was indeed playing "pile on" following upon Dr Hutchinson's not so clandestine attempt to defend Obama's military actions in Africa and the larger region by attacking anyone who dared speak out against it.
Is it fair for me to criticize someone for something that they did not directly do? We can find that answer by making note of their PATTERN of commentary and then notice how they tactfully avoid "the elephant in the room" - as they understand that the readership is not interested in going on an extended struggle against a figure that they venerate (Obama). Thus the integrity must necessarily slip and the base won't bother to call him on it.

- Are Our People Still Being Murdered On The Streets, Far Beyond Our Population Proportions?
- Are Our Children Being Prepared Sufficiently In The Schools That FAVORABLE PEOPLE NOW RUN, In Line With Our Needs For "Professional Service Agents" To Lift Us Up To The Standard Of Living We Desire?
- Are Our Communities The "Jobs Engines" That We Were Promised As We Made The Fusion Between "Our Struggle" And The Team On The Field Of The "Malcolm X Political Football Game"?
If The Answer is NO - Then Why Are We Hearing More Black Media Operatives Telling Us To Focus On HOLDER AND OBAMA Rather Than Having Us To Focus ON WHAT IS GOING ON BACK AT HOME On Our Streets?
