Executive Summary:
Had Dr McWhorter done his analysis of "offended Black people" by flipping the appraisal around and noting what Blacks in the prevailing consciousness DON'T get offended over that they SHOULD be offended about - he would have scored an ace.
It is folly to promote the incident by which the politically-themed Negro is riled up in "offense". Far too often when this "offense" is contrasted against all that is going on WITHIN the Black Community - a person who is seeking to understand "What Makes The Black Political Consciousness Tick" gets frustrated with the lack of transparency seen in the "hair trigger" emotions that are displayed.
In my analysis the same consciousness that produces SILENCE over the near daily murder of a Black person on the streets and then "takes to the streets" when a police man or White man produces the same murderous results is in need of an INDICTMENT to operate upon. When this INDICTMENT proves to be prepended with the word "SELF" we should understand that this silence is the initial step that allows the offense to blow over as the congregation agrees to "not hate on each other" about the fact that the killer has come from the consciousness that they allow to fester upon fellow Negroes in their ranks.
Thus the perversion of having a Black man who has never held an elective office receive more scrutiny from Blacks about his proposed "9-9-9" plan, the same Black Progressives who believed that the "Hope and Change" plan would bring their riches and jobs that are typically the first step in wealth building believe they have the credibility to be fiscal analysts after providing their incompetence in the past.
The issue IS NOT to justify Herman Cain's theories, plans and words.
The issue IS to look at all that is NOT SCRUTINIZED by which makes it into the ranks of the Black Community as "official operating policies". One must note as "favorable people" assume power over our key Human Resource Development Institutions that their present failure produces far less of an indictment against the operators than that which is triggered against Mr Cain. Alas there are many Negroes who are content that Herman Cain could NEVER receive the popular Black vote to run any of these institutions that serve our community. This congregational resolution rings louder than the news that many of these institutions are failing to provide the structure, skills and discipline that our community needs to prosper.
Thus the main "miss" tendered by Dr McWhorter is that he failed to shift the analysis of Herman Cain versus the "Black Flight Progerssives" (which he does talk about) into a conversation about BLACK INSTITUTIONS and how they are failing us in their present form.
Why, for example, is the middle class Black who vacated the "Mission Accomplished Zone" motivated to leave? Why is it that "The Least Of These" who are left behind but have "favorable people" running the institutions within - harmed by the departure of their ideological soul-mate Blacks who have more money and education? Why haven't these institutions provided the UPLIFT to "The Least Of These"?
What made the "Black Flight Progressive" seek to abscond from the area that he struggle to sculpt into a Progressive Paradise - that Mr Cain would not be welcomed in - only to MOVE into an area that has a far greater chance of having "Herman Cain 2012" signs in the year? (I can drive about 3 miles away from where I sit and take pictures of the Tea Party Whites with these signs and then a few doors down "Black Flight Progressives" are preparing their "Obama 2012" signs - as they move in next to "the Enemy" in increasing numbers).
The main flaw with Dr McWhorter's analysis is that he never moves beyond the "transactional gun fight" between Progressives and Conservatives (this time in Black face) to bind his arguments to the question "WHAT ARE WE REALLY ATTEMPTING TO ACCOMPLISH via our POLITICAL ACTIONS?".
Had Dr McWhorter done this it would become obvious that there is far, ,far, far, far more "OFFENSE" to be had by those who have successfully compelled the balance of Black America to invest their Equal Black Ballots and fuse their Community Development Consciousness into the "American Political Domain" and upon one track than there is in the words of Mr Cain or Mr West - players for "the Other Team" who taunt Blacks who PLAY FOR THE OPPOSITION. The main character IS NOT "Their BLACKNESS". It is THE OTHER TEAM in the context of the "Malcolm X Political Football Game".
The GRAND OFFENSE in aggregate is that fraudulent individuals seek to shield their GAMESMANSHIP under the guise of RACE. They tell us that "Black people need to support the team", basing this support upon the threat that the other side represents but fail to detain the organic benefits received WITHIN the Black community.

While I agree with your argument it is far too transactional (based on the gun battle over the issue of Herman Cain) while failing to establish the proper framework for appraisal.
BY FAR........* From a PROPORTIONALITY perspective (the number of Black people injured)* From a CO-CONSPIRATION perspective (the number of Negro Confidence Men in on the scheme)* From a STRATEGIC perspective (the time it will take to undo the damage)
The biggest RACE TRAITORS against the Black Community's interests are those Embedded Confidence Men who CONVINCED BLACK PEOPLE that our "Community Development Consciousness" should be invested into getting their theories into power over the INSTITUTIONS that impact Black America. As they continued their scheme they eroded the INSTITUTIONAL INTEGRITY of the Black Community - abandoning recognized governance models for the same of CONGREGATIONAL UNITY.
They now run our schools and the schools are failing. The protests have stopped for no other reason than this FAVORABLE PERSON is now in charge.Black people continue to be disproportional victims of crime - despite having a favorable police command staff as appointed by the favorable mayor and approved by the favorable city council
Its a sad joke to see Cain, West, Steele and Thomas - who do not have the BALANCE OF POWER to injur Blacks as the PREVAILING Racial Services Machine does - receive an amount of venom from the ideological bigots who play on Black people's sentiments and who should be removed before they cause more damage to our cause. (They can always fall back on their jobs at MSNBC or Washington Post)

Mr McWhoter talked around the concept of INSTITUTIONS.
Greater than the statement from Black Flight Progressives of "I don't want to live around poor Blacks" is the painful truth that WILL NOT be broadcast through the LampBlack Yellow Journalist Press:
1) The IDEOLOGY and Party that - A) Got into power in these "Mission Accomplished Zones" based on the promise of a FIX retained their power after the failure. A popular Negro talking point that brings mental comfort says "We IF the Republicans had been in power our fate would have been even worse because they don't like Black people"
B) The Black Flight Progressives helped bring into power is the same force that motivated them to MOVE as the ENEMY that they once fought against left them all alone. When the mandate to switch from "Social Justice" over to "Organic Production" came upon him - the Black Flight Progressive saw that his IDEOLOGICAL ENEMY was less of a threat to his family's interests than was his IDEOLOGICAL FRIEND who he FAILED to develop institutional governance competencies through
C) In his NEW, more conservative community the Black Flight Progressive is seen trying to implement the same progressive policies that caused him to MOVE
He can't bring himself to see that he is attempting to functionally GET AWAY FROM HIMSELF.
2) The HIJACKING Of the Black Community Development Consciousness A) Ironically this round of political redistricting is one where the RACIST CONSERVATIVES are seeking to marginalize [strike]Democratic Voter[/strike] Minority voting strength as the GOP seeks to recognize the population gains as people exited the Mission Accomplished zones INTO the more conservatively governed areas
B) The bigots can't see that the greatest amount of MINORITY DISENFRANCHISEMENT is seen where the Black Vote is invested FREELY but the governing system is FUNCTIONALLY IRRELEVANT toward improving their lives (Newark, Philly, Detroit, Buffalo, Flint, Cleveland, Camden, parts of Chicago)
If drug is sold in mass quantities yet fails to show evidence of any pharmacological benefit the product is pulled from the market and the vendor is brought up on charges.
As the IDEOLOGY and associated SCHEME that promises to "Fix Up The Negro" is allowed to SELF-DIAGNOSE, SELF-PRESCRIBE AND THEN SELF-MEDICATE and upon sensing a lack of a cure transforms the pill called "Hope and Change" into "Hope and Change 2" without suffering any rebuke BECAUSE of the opportunity that this might provide to the agreed upon ENEMY, Dr McWhorter - it is time to LOOK PAST the words that OFFENDS THE NEGRO IN HIS PRESENT CONSCIOUSNESS.
It is time to do a deep seeded probe of his present psychological standing.What he SHOULD BE offended about passes like water under the bridge per his "congregational coping skills".
That which can get large quantities of "Protesting Negroes" out to a rally is far more often than not NOT the prevailing threat that befalls their people. It is merely the more popular agent to produce UNITY in their STRUGGLE.
