THIS IS NOT AN ATTACK PIECE ON MANNING MARABLE.
I give condolence to his family for their loss of a loved one at such a relatively young age.
I know Prof Marable via his works and his public pronouncements. This blog post will be a critical analysis of these viewpoints in relation to the present confinements that the Black community is in today.
I am not of the academy. I am not a "student' of Prof Marable's work.
I am a student of "The Black Community And The Political/Ideological Overlay" that are the forces that bear down upon the direction that it takes against external forces who's intensity is - real or imagined. .
In as much I choose to place Prof Marable into the slot reserved for "Progressive Humanities Professors". Thus it is not important that I understand the minute differences that might exist between he and his fellow travelers. Instead the commonality in their function is of greater importance.
The Progressive Humanities Professors:
The humanities are academic disciplines that study the human condition, using methods that are primarily analytical, critical, or speculative, as distinguished from the mainly empirical approaches of the natural science.(For the sake of expediency I will include those who use their "Economics" training as a tool for their "Humanities Activism" in on this list. "The Law" is considered an element of the humanities)
- Professor Manning Marable
- Professor Cornel West
- Professor Michael Eric Dyson
- Professor Marc Lamont Hill
- Professor Julianne Malveaux
- Professor Michelle Alexander
- Professor Boyce Watkins
- Professor Michael Fauntroy
- Professor Angela Davis
I heard on the "Bev Smith Show" last week that there is a growing notion that it is "cool to be anti-intellectual" fomenting in this nation. It was said to be a part of the attack on "the arts" and "the academy" via budget cuts.
The complement to this claim are the people who leverage the arts and the academy to advance their agenda, making the case that those who are not qualified to conduct a "peer review" of their work, per their position outside of "the academy" need not be paid attention to.
Though I have a college degree with several decades of professional experience, no amount of independent reading and research that I do, after having applied these tools that I received from college - will ever allow me to break through this "Institutional Bigtory" of the academy. I know about the mandate for "peer review" after having challenged various "Professors with Blogs" (not all on humanities issues, some with technology or science related) on the opinions they posit using the cover of the "academy". Those who are deeply entrenched into "the academy" demand "peer reviewed" research before they will accept a counter-claim.
It doesn't take a large leap of logic to see that if there is a cluster of "members of the academy" with the same bias and they review each other's works that the "A Fish Don't Know He Wet" phenomenon kicks in and the latest piece merely fortifies their pre-existing world view.
The Real World RESULTS Versus Abstract Academic Theory
In the world of "community organizing events" - I am thinking of one big-time Atlanta pastors who's forum I attended on a Saturday. At the microphone he lamented that we need to stop focusing on what the press is saying about the Black community and instead focus on healing within. On the next Tuesday - I saw this very same man on television doing everything that he suggested that we avoid just a few days prior.
The point of this quick diversion is to indicate the gross difference between what can be conjured up inside of the edifice with marble pillars in which the crowd inside is either asked to worship the glories of God or the intellectual who stands at the microphone in front of students AND that which can change the course of the people on the streets, once the doors are open at the end of the service or lecture.
As a community we are too caught up in what sounds rationally agreeable to us, unable to see that we are taking it in while our consciousness is at a particular state.
Add to it a "confidence man" who is very articulate in his elocution of certain words and concepts and unlimited is the canvas upon which he can create the imagery for us to follow along, assured that our "congregational unity" is going to serve as the difference in results 'this time'.
The State Of Black America Is Getting Worse - The Root.com - March 31, 2011
The news from this section break is not something that should be mentioned at this time with so many "Missions Accomplished" per the priorities that have been put forth by the Black Establishment and agreed upon by various "Progressive Humanities Professors".
As an observer and critic of this "insider trading" between the tentacles of the establishment I am not at all surprised at their next strategic projection upon the Black community. With the one point that is certain: They will NEVER accept any accountability for the present state after having directed our consciousness AND won't dare an accounting of what went wrong - the only logical set of "revised plans" is for them to rally the troops in some type of "Try Harder This Time" scheme. With the upcoming national elections - the "congregational unity" movements that they project upon the rank & file are as predictable as are "biorhythms" and a menstrual cycle.
The phrase that has stuck in my mind from Manning Marable came from a documentary interview that I saw from him several years ago. He was being interviewed in a park and voiced the words: "Black People Are The Most Intelligent Voters In America Because They Know Who Has Their Best Interests In Mind".
Now of course - the fact that we Black people are the most predictable set of voters, with a higher rate of Democratic Party voting than any other racial group in America, makes the pronouncements of the late Prof Marable either prophetic in his understanding of Black people or merely gives an insight of his own ideological and political biases.
It doesn't take a great imagination to assume that the evidence that "Black people have gotten DUMB in our voting" is expressed by our diversity shown in voting. But of course - who would vote for our ENEMIES. You know - the one's that are denying us access to quality education per the administrative control that they have over local, majority Black school systems. ( :-/ )
Professor Marable was said to be an "unapologetic AfroCentrist" in his thoughts, according to one person that I listened to this past weekend. I struggle to understand - WHY - with the notion of "voting for our racial healing", which is an attribute of the "American Political Domain" we never heard Prof Marable argue for the separation of our conscious state out of this domain?
There are no "Democrats" and "Republicans" in Africa / the Disapora.
In a Black, independent nation such as Haiti - the theories of "States Rights" versus "federal entitlements that provide Social Justice" is IRRELEVANT - IF - the nation in aggregate can't produce the base-line economic produce necessary for these competing economic theories to decide on the most practical distribution model.
I choose to appraise the utility of the messages from the "Progressive Humanities Professors" beyond what they tell us TO DO per their ideological comforts. Instead their track record of warnings of what we SHOULD NOT DO (and the lack there of) is more insightful.

- WHERE are those who demand a "Separation Between 'Black Consciousness' and State?
- WHO is using their scientific method to do a dispassionate review of the agenda that was hoisted upon Black America in the LAST INTERVAL and appraise its effectiveness (and WHO it actually benefited) and then enforce certain barriers to our "Racial Consciousness Nucleus" so that we will NEVER be used again?
- WHAT are their plans to leverage our organic capabilities as a community (and the purported $1T that we have at our disposal) to ensure that more of our young people are trained up in "The Academy"?
- HOW do they suggest we methodically achieve a better set of results than what the last interval has brought forth?
Black people need to apply our "Intelligence", assigning it to the SKEPTICISM of the "Embedded Confidence Men" who tell us how smart we are as we do their bidding.
With so much success at obtaining power over the key institutions of our community, why aren't there 10 young Black people waiting to replace Manning Marable as a researcher, having been prepared for the task per the presence of "favorable people" in the institutions that were to develop them to this level?
