The Perpetually Dangled Carrot - "The Job Has Not Been Completed"

The Perpetually Dangled Carrot - "The Job Has Not Been Completed"

Just prior to exiting my house this morning I watched the news as it recounted the "rituals" seen at the Ebenezer Baptist Church the day prior in support of "MLK Jr Day 2011".

In the interview with Martin Luther King III he made mention that "the mission is not yet complete.  There still exists poverty and injustice", making note that we must continue the struggle.

As I backed out of my driveway my eyes were focused upon my roof.  There was one stream of snow that was left after several days of above-freezing weather - it still survived because it gets no sunlight.  This scene caused me to think about the recent roofing job in which I ordered up a new set of asphalt shingles from a roofing contractor.

As I thought about the words "The Job Is Not Yet Finished" I applied it to the construct of "WHO is likely to say these words?"   The consumer or the contractor?

With regard to my roofing job the contractor told me "The Job Is Complete.  Please sign on the dotted line so that they could receive payment, per the agreed upon process".    I would later find that while the construction was indeed finished - the fact that a heavy dumpster which was parked right in front of my garage doors, preventing my wife from driving her car for 3 days - I got reminded from HER that - until this refuse container is removed from our property - THE JOB IS NOT COMPLETE!!!   I had to let her use my car until the heavy duty pickup truck with the goose-neck hitch came 2 days late - to pull the trailer that was too heavy for my truck to shift to the side.

INDEED - "The Job Is Complete" is a relative term, dependent upon where we reside in the transaction:
  • The SERVICE PROVIDER
  • The CONSUMER

The Service Provider Of The Mission vs The Consumer Enabler vs The Third Party Certifier/Arbitrator

The "Service Provider" is on the hook for the completion of the task.  He has made certain promises and usually defines specific criteria that someone can use to evaluate the completed state of the mission:
  • The air plane is built and has passed its flight testing
  • The house is constructed, is water-tight and has a certificate of occupancy from a third party certifying entity
  • Your kid has a degree in hand - representing the extension of the university's credibility upon the individual that has matriculated through its system
The "Consumer" is the judge of the completed state of the mission.   They receive the product or service that has been transacted.  There is typically a "30 day return policy" granted to them by the "Service Provider".  During this time they can repudiate the purchase, bringing it back.   In not speaking out during this window the service provider assumes their contentment with the services rendered.

If you note the bullet points above there is also the presence of a TRANSPARENT third party.  The entity that provides the building permit and/or demands insurance coverage for the construction contractor's workers.  The accrediting agency of the college.  They insert themselves as middle-men to insure that both contractor and consumer have their interests protected.

As I listened to Martin Luther King III say to the world "the mission is not yet complete - there is a longer way to go" - I was made to ask myself: "What role does Martin Luther King III and the rest of the 'Civil Rights Establishment' of 2011 fit - so that they might say - "THE JOURNEY IS NOT YET COMPLETE", doing so with integrity in their appraisal?

As I recalled the statement from Jesus himself saying "The poor will ALWAYS be among you"

For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
John 12:8

If we will always have "the Least Of These" amongst us - is it legitimate to place the eradication of their state as a reasonable end point?

Please recall that I stated earlier that a contractor is typically specific on what the end of his project will look like - so that he might get paid.   Only those contractors who have an open ended contract yet receive "earnest money" in payment for work completed along the way doth PROFIT from sketchy details about what the end point will look.

I was convinced that Martin Luther King III was not merely a CONSUMER when I saw him locked in arms with the sitting mayor of the City Of Atlanta.  Instead of engaging in a protest march against this authority - the young Kasim Reed and his placement in the mayor's office is evidence of a check having been cashed.   As Martin III and his Civil Rights Pharisee partners reenact the "Atlanta Race Riot Of 1906" each spring - this time the mayor of the City Of Atlanta will be on "their side", commanding the police to close down Auburn Avenue so that none of the rally supporters are threatened by the automobile traffic that usually runs the length of the street.

It comes as no surprise - per my observations - that when the rank & file within the community suffers from the assaults that used to be called a "civil rights violation" - regardless of if it was seen in one physical assault or a long running assault of educational underperformance - those who used to protest on the marble stairs of the most proximate government building which held the seat of power - now are predisposed to walk a bit further toward the next higher rung of government where their IDEOLOGICAL ADVERSARY holds the yellow copy of the contract which has not been fulfilled.  He goes there to demand fulfilment, having walked past the local service provider who holds the white copy of the duplicate form.

In as much as the INDICTMENT against his adversary is the calling card of the Progressive-Fundamentalist - abject COMPLICITY in the machinations of his "machine-mate" who he views favorably rounds out the transaction that he is known to make as the "CONSUMER of Social Justice".

Those who don't inspect this relationship will attempt to disaggregate this one machine.  The words spoken as the "Defender Of The Least Of These" as he carries protest signs are in fact the same words as the new AUTHORITY who was put into power to have the government work for them.   When this same machine needs to get its word out to the larger masses - they call out "their guy" who sits in the news room.  He will always give the authority figure an opportunity to turn in his profile so that the picture will always be of their "good side".  And the consuming public always wondered why he seems so "photogenic".

Transparent Contract Terms

In as much as there is much grievance heard about "subprime lending terms" - no bank has anything on the high handedness seen on the "inside dealers".   They are the one's who are known to "change the APR" once all parties sit down at the closing.

The machine in question realizes that the "Black home owner" is more desperate to insure that THEY get their "commission check" from the successful "refinancing" that takes place every 2 years in November - that they won't bother to make mention of all of the hand written additions to the standard contract, agreeding to put their initials beside them each time.  IF there was ever a need for a "consumer activist" to stand in the breach and protect the contract signee from the antics of the contract holder (or his broker) there is no greater a case than this.

There is a greater need for TRANSPARENCY in the interfaces of the components of the  "Black Establishment"  listed in the diagram above than ever before.   As WE fill the seats that WE used to protest against (I am watching "Democracy Now" in the background as Dr King speaks in Memphis - the day before he was assasinated.  It seems pretty clear that he was demanding that the establishment reform their ways).    It is my opinion that those who CLAIM to retain his legacy today might have his economic theories but are predisposed to avoid due criticism of their "Black establishment brothers" who now hold establishment power in the government institutions.    It is the opposing ideology that is a greater predictor of their voice of opposition than is the occupation of a given seat of power.  The Black press tentacle has more critical ink committed against Blacks who have no direct elected power at the hands of Black people than it does the larger quantity of Blacks in institutional seats but who share their ideology.  It is clear that "Ideological Unity Enforcement" is the agenda.

Those who are short-sighted fail to see that their long run advantage is to MANAGE all who occupy the seat of power.   Having clear contract terms and enforcing these standards, regardless of one's interest in the contractor would bring them closer to their acquisition of the dream.
