Wal-Mart Comes To The Rescue In Atlanta's Westside Village

Wal-Mart Commits To Locate New Store At The Publix Site Closed A Year Ago

A year ago I covered the closure of the Publix grocery store on MLK Jr Blvd near the Atlanta University Center.  Recently Atlanta city officials held a press conference at the site of the store to announce that the Wal-Mart Corporation had agreed to take over the abandoned site, expanding it into a Super Wal-Mart.

Regardless of one's feelings about Wal-Mart this is a good deal.  This is the only first run grocery store for the community.  The average Wal-Mart in the urban metro-area is jam packed with customers.  Wal-Mart knows what they are doing in addressing the needs of an "underserved" community.

For a strip that has heard more promises about its redevelopment than delivery Wal-Mart will be a welcomed site for the community that surrounds the facility.   They had better have a side street entrance for the the auto traffic that this store is going to generate on MLK Dr.
