Each passing day appears to bring forth news of yet another violent protest rally on the continent of Europe. People are taking to the streets and executing property damage in response to various economic or political circumstances in their respective nations that they disagree with.
This is not a display of small "D" democratic expression. Those who transact in the most violent and destructive forms of protest are trafficking in anarchy. The democratically elected government had better do their bidding or the consequence is violence on the street.
After years of constructing a social safety net that they could not afford the governments are now forced to make painful austerity cuts in order to remain solvent. The people who attuned their lives to the level afforded to them by the government - but which was in excess of their personal productivity to support this lifestyle - now find themselves uncertain and upset at the thought of cuts and/or forced to pay for services that they had previously received at a highly subsidized rate.
Despite all of the positive references to Europe that provided guidance on what America should one day hope to be - many who were speaking these words a year ago during the health care debate are now silent about Europe. (There are plenty of indictments in America that are favorable to their ideology. They don't feel the need to expand beyond their core competencies and tell a balanced story for their followers).
