Dekalb CEO Calls For A Tax Increase As Residence Suffer From Depreciating Home Values And County Faces A US Justice Department Consent Decree To Spend Hundreds Of Millions For A Sewer Upgrade
One reason why the "tax the rich" disposition of many progressives remains strong is that such a nationalized drive with the notions of forward progress allows them to overcome the critical challenges of having to balance the books locally.
Dekalb County has a full array of "favorable leadership" in place as elected by the people. These leaders face a desperate challenge: in order to retain the desired standard of living within the county they will need to raise taxes. The US Justice Department is also pushing the issue of the "environmental justice/ civil rights violations" associated with the sewer system in its present form.
I am in no way attempting to diminish the challenges faced by the county's leadership. The declining home values in the county (which is due to several reasons) means that less tax revenue will be received from the existing inventory of properties in the county. The county is forced to alter the millage rate in order to retain the same tax digest as before. In a case of "SimCity meets the real world" - the more the taxes rise and the property values decrease - the greater the exodus to Gwinnett County, Rockdale County, Newton County or Walton County for people seeking to cut their losses.
The leadership of Dekalb County have some critical decisions to make. The quality of life is no doubt a function of the monetary base and related market activity within the domain in question. If Dekalb County is branded as a unfavorable place to live and do business the spiral downward will continue as the vote of no confidence comes to bear.
