I have heard Rev Joseph Lowery give several "unity" speeches over the years.
While at the podium he talked about how Whites and Blacks in Georgia have more in common that are at risk than we have as unique interests.
In as much as so much of his activism have been focused upon implementing certain policies and attacking certain "threats" against "The Least Of These" - with the apparent assumption that all Blacks are "The Least Of These" - the function of his message was "Drop all of the foolishness that is found in your entrenched position and come under the tent that I have erected as it is moral and just".
In my assessment of Rev Lowery and other members of the Civil Rights Pharisees that strongly influence the Metro Atlanta political machine it is their INTENTIONS that trump the results that they have garnered that provide them with the title of "The Moral Compass".
In as much as their enemies are guilty of seeking to "turn back the clock", the Civil Rights Pharisees are equally guilty of using their past "victories" as evidence of their present competencies to lead our community further along our trek. In truth their words are as empty as are the Black Republican who leans on his notion that "Martin Luther King Jr was a Republican" as a prime motivator as to why Blacks of today should join them in their wistful struggle to make the GOP appealing to Black folks.
If you drive the streets of Atlanta that are named after Rev Lowery and many of the others who walked during the Civil Rights Movement you won't see "equality" as arrived at via the propulsion of new competencies that have been crafted by the machine that now dominates the areas. Instead you'll see what is best described as placid 'vote harvesting' areas where the strong block of representation has leveraged their new found powers to draw more resources into the place thus achieving a measure of contentment that is occasionally disrupted by a disturbance of violence or a change in some government policy (housing, public transportation) that riles people up. In response to this disruption in the force - the "community leader" steps forth and gets his time at the microphone to redirect the masses as to who their real enemy is that has them still suffering their present fate.
The Betrayal Of The Black Establishment
The exodus of these two former Black Democrats to the Republican party represents a threat to the "Enforced Ideological Unity" that all who congregate have been on message about. It hurts as if a "traitor was within". Now he has escaped to the "other side", possibly providing them with notes on what makes the machine tick.
Again, the venom spewed on the "Black-wing" radio station locally was not directed at the "traitors". The dramatics were for the purposes of firing a warning shot as publicly as possible to those still within the flock to not even think about doing the same.
The main hijacking of the "Black Consciousness" comes in that one's "real Blackness" is indexed to their loyalty to progressivism and the Democratic Party and the INTENTIONS that they both represent in helping "the Least Of These". It is no surprise that the Black Consciousness has been hijacked as such because Christianity was hijacked in the same way prior to it. Helping "the Least Of These" has trumped any objective measure of evidence by which those created in the "image of God" have been empowered to grow to this form without "Jesus" in the form of favorable politicians carrying him along - thus the one pair of foot prints in the sand.
Sadly today as I listen to the various media streams of the Black Quasi-Socialist Progressive-Fundamentalist Racism Chaser - the full fusion of their ideology/politics and racial/community consciousness is proven by the INTERCHANGABILITY of their strategic discussions about their RACE/COMMUNITY and the fate of the Democratic Party in relation to its perpetual struggle with the Republicans.
I struggle to understand how one Black man who serves as a county commissioner in Hall County that has 7,500 Black people is a bigger THREAT to Black people after switching parties than are the machine of leader that remain in their party and preside over the institutions in metro Atlanta that have far, far, far larger Black constituencies. There has been no combination of academic results, threats to safe streets or economic malaise that has triggered the same type of scorn that have been heaped upon these two in recent times.
If we scale nationally we can hear the primary focus of the Congressional Black Caucus is to fight against the Republican attempts to remove resources away from programs that help Black people. (Redistributive policies). This sounds like a noble cause until you also scale down locally and see that even when there are no Republicans in earshot - the results that are tendered from the institutions that are favorably controlled are STILL blamed on the injustice that has been suffered as the "social INjustice" that redistributed resources denied has engendered.
WHO is the greatest threat to "the least of these"? Those who refuse to feed them today?
Or those who took control over the "ponds" around them over time with the promises of feeding them and yet they have not yet developed appropriate "fishery management" systems that the masses might develop?
