The Use Of The Word "Nigger" In Commercial Speech Vs Private Conversations

You probably do not have the Flash Player (Get Adobe Flash Player Here) installed for your browser or the video files are misplaced on your server!

This video clip provides a perfect synopsis of why the use of the word "Nigger" in the commercial content put forth by SOME Black entertainers continues to go unchecked.

I like Michelle Martin on balance. Though she is biased to the left her professional journalism skills shine through more often than not and thus she will eventually get around to asking a question of an ideological ally that most of her biased Black press contemporaries won't ask as it would compromise their defense strategy.

On this point Ms Martin displays her skill at spinning the issue.

The real issue at hand with respect to both the outrage against Dr Laura and her observations which got her in trouble is the appropriateness of allowing the word "Nigger" to be used in COMMERCIAL SPEECH.

When Ms Martin got on her soap box and noted that "Black people shouldn't have to own up to the actions of other Blacks" this was a diversion, though a skillful one. The very same organizations that went to the sponsors and syndicates of Dr Laura ALSO have the ability to make the offense of using the word "Nigger / Nigga" in commercial materials put forth by Black people.

What they understand, however, is that if there was an attempt to crack down upon this segment of the Black entertainment culture a backlash of attacks similar to those suffered by the late C. Delores Tucker would be had. In the process the Black Establishment forces that have a vested interest in UNITY over detangling these points of hypocrisy from our charter would have to take the unsavory president of "picking sides" among otherwise ideologically favorable Black people. If only Hip Hop artists were Black Conservatives - it would be far easier to mount a campaign against them.

Sitting In A Sports Bar In A Professional Class Section Of Metro Atlanta

This past Saturday I got a quick drink with a good friend of mine who is going through a divorce.  We went to a sports bar in the CampCreek Market Place in East Point Georgia.  When I walked in the first thing I noticed is that the music was too loud to accommodate casual conversion among the patrons.

With the crowd being 98% Black, a few White people spotting the place the d.j. played a series of Hip Hop and Beyonce songs - all of which had the ladies rocking in their seats, I noticed.

I also noticed another important point - a significant portion of these songs were laced with the word "Nigger/Nigga".   The dual offense of having commercial music containing this (supposedly) offensive word and a commercial establishment choosing to play it all in an unedited form was of no particular consequence to the average patron in the place.   Take this scene and replicate it hundreds of times throughout Black America and we get the real picture of the rules for the use of this word.

It is best thought of as a vector for indictment when there is a political or racial advantage to be had.  PERIOD.

If the claim is that "Black people are offended when White people call us this hateful word" then it is incumbent upon the Black community to at least regulate the COMMERCIAL vehicles that are used to bring this word into the auditory canals of White people as they dance or laugh.  If their racist uncle Bubba is the source of this word into their ear via a private conversation- there is little that I care to do to stop him from doing so.  He has no power over me.

UPDATE

Yeah - what he said. (Though there is a difference between PRIVATE speech and COMMERCIAL speech).

It up to those forces who I listed above to punish the COMMERCIAL use of the word.

It is up to the Black community to enforce the PRIVATE use of the word, particularly in public accommodations such as the train or bus.
