This is not about Dr Laura.
The question of this post is - Should a person who is in an interracial relationship be surprised as friends of same race as their love interest "ask curious questions" about their race OR would it be better to edit their comments, making sure they never discuss race? Thus maintaining the "elelphant in the room" effect?
I can think of 3 interracial couples that I consider friends. In fact one was over my house this past weekend. In the context of describing my family reunion trip to Charleston South Carolina that I was asked about I told of my visit to two cemetaries. The first cemetary had my direct decendants. The second church cemetary was a "White church".
As I spoke about the differences in the size of the tombstones for 'White folks' I observed the White person in the room but still made my point of my observations.
Two members of an interracial couple should expect to deal with the fact that we do not live in a "color blind society". Yes those who are among their friends should be sensitive to the challenges and not add to them. When it comes to the general public - that cold stare that one sees at the sight of this pairing might come from the Black female who sees a "brother" with "another" as well as a White male who imagines that this might be his daughter.
In my life I have dated a mullato female. It took a double take to see that she was indeed mixed. Unfortunately I was uncomfortable with all of the stares that we received as we walked though "Underground Atlanta". Beyond the interpersonal conflict that is present in a relationship - an interracial couple is prone to have to deal with the external pressures that bear down from society.
I agree with Dr Laura's observations on the question of "make sure you know what you are getting in to". I just believe that she was harsh in the way that she said it.
“Take Back The Black Community Consciousness". It has been hijacked by embedded operatives who don't intend to develop the COMPETENCIES within. We once controlled this consciousness, focusing our activism directly upon our permanent interests. Today the "Malcolm X Political Football Game" has us as starters and some believe that this playing time translates into absolute progress for our people. My goal is to hold our permanent interests in their faces, forcing them to explain their actions.
