"I Am Omar" - The Understanding Of SOME Black-Wing Talk Radio Callers With The Actions Of A Mass Murderer

Let me start off this post with a point of praise for WAOK radio host Derrick Boazman.

Though I rarely see eye to eye with his viewpoints I have to give him an applause with his disposition on this case.

Whereas most callers assumed that Boazman would prioritize the claims of RACISM and how this force had pushed Omar Thornton to murder 8 White people, he instead flipped the script upon them all, refusing to accept this as a justification in the least.

Boazman noted that employment discrimination must be placed in check by following the processes that are available to mitigate this stain not only for Omar Thornton but also any other employee employed by the corporation.   He suggested going to the EEOC, making recordings of offensive words and putting one's concerns in writing for the record.  Nothing was gained by the way Omar chose to act.

Boazman had to rise up against several callers who said that they agreed with what Omar Thornton had done.

He said that there are several points that don't hold up in regards to Omar Thornton being justifiably a victim of racism:
  • He got a promotion via his time on the job
  • He has a White girl friend that he went home to every night
  • There is no evidence that he has ever tried to depart the job as his own self worth was larger than "a job given to him by a White man"
Derrick Boazman is right on with this issue.  He noted that our own racial dignity and self-worth must be greater than anything that someone else can take away via a job that they dangle in front of us.

Unsavory Thoughts And Words Are Not The Exclusive Province Of Right-Wing Talk Radio

Far too frequently my sampling of opinions expressed on Black-wing talk radio are laced with the same putrid smell of a septic system that many people note about right-wing talk radio. Only the assumed inferior political threat that is assigned to this segment of the Black community allow them to escape the same scrutiny that is imposed upon the Right-wing. (That and the fact that there is no "Media Matters" type monitoring organization that is paying attention to their words).

As I listened to the Derrick Boazman show on WAOM AM in Atlanta while driving home on Friday evening and heard no less than 60% of his call in guests expressed "understanding" as to why mass murderer Omar Thornton did what he did. About 20% of these callers expressed outright support for his actions, suggesting that "the chickens had come home to roost".  Another call used the word "they" and "we" when he talked about how "THEY should now know how it feels when White police officers shoot OUR people dead and then THEY get off scott-free".  He was making the point that as Whites see US - via the actions of Omar Thornton responding to their racial taunts that they would now see what could happen when they don't stand for justice.

I am brought to the point of amazement when I hear the same people who desire to strip every last inch of "black" off of Brother Justice Clarence Thomas' hide are also capable of assigning the highest order of Blackness upon a "Criminal who is Black" and then dutifully form a connection with him.

So frequently we hear in response to a murder or shooting: "The death penalty is not a fitting punishment for burglary". I heard no one make this same case about EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION. Omar Thornton being the victim of racism, the prosecutor, the judge, jury, and executioner seemed just fine to them.

At the time that the Black community and its media sources need to be calling for an equal amount of level-headedness those who make use of the indictment of others to justify their own skeptical dispositions on race in America always seem to obtain a failing grade when the occasion presents them with the opportunity to call for "by the book" justice.
