"Everybody expected they would have gotten further. That's the surprise" - Said Dr Ronald Walters
I actually have a lot of respect for the intelligence of Dr Ronald Walters - PolySci Professor at University of Maryland and Democratic Party operative into the Black community. He is best seen as a contract compliance officer with the tacit agreement between the Democratic Party and the Black Establishment as the tentacles of the Black Establishment work to keep the Black Community unified behind the progressive platform which INTENDS to solve all of our problems. Or at least keep us chasing after the carrot in the process of INTENDED to do so.
While Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and other 'Democrat who are Black' operative are leading the street and media organizing intended to keep Black people UNIFIED, Dr Ronald Walters and Donna Brazille are doing the vital strategic development work that delivers the Black vote into the Democratic Party column, regardless of the conditions that we face in our communities.
From their efforts - we got a "Black President".
If you wanted more absolute and measurable benefits locally in your community - you'll just have to keep chasing after that carrot.
I Ain't Mad At 'Em
I recall in the year 2006 just prior to the Democratic Party take over of Congress. Republicans were on their heels, being picked off by scandal. The NPR Black themed show "News and Notes" interviewed several members of the Congressional Black Caucus - asking them how things would change IF the Democrats took over the US House.
The late Stephanie Tubbs-Jones noted that a Black man would be "Ways and Means" chair (Rangel) and the "Judiciary Committee" (Conyers) that she would be the ranking member of - (I don't recall the committee so I won't guess".). Ms Jones noted that she would do all that she could to reduce the 13.9% unmeployment rate for her greater Cleveland district down to a more reasonable number via the new powers that the Democratic Party would have if Black people did our part in voting out the GOP from power.
At the time that Jesse Jackson joined in on the "Take Back The US House" campaign (I called him out for saying "WE" asking if he meant "We Democrats" or "We Black folks"?). He did not realize that "WE" - meaning "Democrats who are Black" would take the US House and the US Senate in 2006. They are now on their 4th year of control. You wouldn't know this based upon their convenient attacks upon the Bush Administration.
I am not mad at the Democrats from a pure political standpoint. The purpose of political parties are to gain and retain POWER. In as much as they have fused the Black Establishment powers onto their agenda - I have to applaud the Democratic Party for skillfully linking up with Waters and Brazille who are much more competent in making this work that the others who get more camera time.
However as a Black man I reject this fusion where my own "Racial/Community Development" has been fused to an entity in the American Political Domain. The Democratic Party is not at fault here. The Black Establishment leadership who made such an agreement and worked to do their part in delivering the Black vote should be held exclusively accountable.
"Everybody expected they would have gotten further. That's the surprise" - Said Dr Ronald Walters
When you read these words from Dr Ronald Walters - a key architect in these present results you must understand that this is an admission that comes with zero possibility of any negative consequence being rendered upon him and others for "failing" to deliver a greater set of goods for our community's interests.
Worse yet is the fact that absolutely no one in the "Black Press" is going to remember the grand plan that was erected in 2006 and circle back around to demand that the Congressional Black Caucus validate its promises - 4 years hence. Shamara Reilly of "Booker Rising" was an invited "round table" guest on "Tell Me More". Each time she went on the show I asked her to pass along the question to the show host Fariah Chidea my interests to have her do a follow up interview with every single CBC member that made promises back in 2006, inspecting where they stand today. The show is gone and this is not going to happen.
My observation about Black political activism is that when the popular adversary fails - this provides impetus for the Black community to formulate a massive voter turn out to purge them.
When the "favored people" fail to deliver, however, the embedded operatives within our racial consciousness nucleus position things as failure that was caused by the active antagonism of our adversaries. Thus we need to "VOTE HARDER", despite the failures so that we have more power to defeat the adversary and thus "catch the carrot".
I hope that you all see that THEY ARE NOT GOING TO STOP.
They are going to continue to lead our community on.
Only the Black Rank and File, who is duly schooled on proper management practices can set up limits and regulation of these operatives, forcing them to deliver or risk abandonment for a more effective strategy.
My goal is to make sure that there are no more SURPRISES for the Black rank and file in 4 more years. I am sure that all of you can agree to this.
