For me as an observer, analyst and critic of the antics of those who claim to speak in the name of the Black community I am less bothered by the words that are said as I am in the context within which they are said.
As they work to reclaim Martin Luther King Jr's "dream" they are reduced to executing empty rituals that convey to the present day followers that they are King's legitimate offspring.
Despite the fact that the Black community today:
- Suffers from violence as in the past but from an assailant that is different from King's day
- Is denied quality education because of confiscated instructional time, having gotten past those who used to block the doorway to the schools
- Has our local economic development efforts squandered by a suppressive threat that casts the same results as did our enemies in the past
Despite all of this truth of the day for them to ponder - operatives like Al Sharpton know that if they keep Black folks keyed in on the past and making sure that our historic adversaries don't "take us back" in time - that the average Black person will look past that which assaults us in the greatest abundance today and instead focus upon "recapturing the dream".
We must note that in the present day protests - with a favorable local and national government in hand - gone are the protests AGAINST the establishment that makes demands for jobs and justice. Now there are demands that the favorable government impose more of its power against the corporate enemies of the left, forcing them to create jobs in addition to spending more debt money from the government in the process of creating jobs.
There is no intention to purge the government that is failing these permanent interests. Instead the movement requires them to focus their efforts in making their permanent friends stronger as they march to express the mandate that the government has been given.
