Intergroup conflict has two faces:
- The character that the group has for itself as presented in the advocacy for their positions
- The image, often slanderous, that its opposition likes to paint of the group as a means of fortifying the support of their own group
At the macro-level the ideological spectrum between Right and Left seems to be the overriding framework. For me, per my previous analysis I think that it is more accurate to view this as "Establishment" and "Challengers To The Establishment".
I have argued before that Progressivism and Conservatism are tools that should be used in a certain contextualization. Those that own the system that is in force and have the obligation to defend it against those who seek to challenge it with their own ideas are inclined to make use of "right wing" tactics by which the institutions are protected. Those that are of the mind of the oppressed see the system as the main threat to them and thus they often strike out against "Da Man" as their cause celebre.
In this perpetual fight the establishment sees the "anarchists" as the threat. The "oppressed" see the establishment as their oppressor. Thus they toil until the other is placed in check.
The news media no doubt has its thumb on the scale as it more often is sympathetic to the cause of those who see themselves as oppressed. Many in the media see themselves as countering the daily criminal spotlight stories (the news of the latest murder conducted by those who went afoul of the law) by netting the big fish - making an indictment against an authority figure who as enforcer of the system of laws has himself fallen short of the laws and should be taken out.
When the news media is used as a check and balance it performs a valuable service. When the news media becomes a complicit operatives, executing an agenda by cherry picking their indictments, saying nothing about others who should be indicted - they should be called out as frauds.
I think that the mainstream media in America today has reached the state of fraudulence. (Not saying that they have ever NOT been frauds).
To the right wing protests groups the news media are able to paint them as the bigger threat by playing up what they MIGHT do. To the left wing protest groups that do actually commit violent and destructive acts and carry posters that are malicious and hateful in nature - their acts never seem to reach the level of threat that their right wing compliments have achieved. In my view the right wing protester is seen as a defender of the establishment order while the left as its challenger. Thus the exhibition of violence by the anarchist does not achieve the level of authority.
These actions cannot stand intellectual scrutiny.
Even in the case where there is no proof of procedural injustice - as in the case of the Oscar Grant Homicide Trial - those who disagree with the verdict are given to take to the streets with violent protests.
In the world of slander - while ONE right winger is enough to tar and feather the motivations of the others as hateful - not even a STRING OF anarchical behavior in Oakland when the homicide happened, when the trial ended, when the G20 met and when the Lakers won the NBA Championship is enough evidence for there to be an indictment against the anarchists as being prone to violence.
