Sadly Dekalb County Georgia seems to be walking down the same path that ensnared Clayton County Georgia over the past several years.
If you recall Clayton County Schools, after years of scandal and infighting lost their accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The loss in accreditation in Clayton triggered a massive exodus of families who sought a more stable academic environment. This in turn triggered a massive loss in property values in the county. This, of course, has an impact upon the "oft talked about but rarely analyzed" loss of inter-generational wealth between races, the one that has Black people intractably behind White folks. Racism claimed to be the culprit.
The main point of frustration that I have is that even after having mass awareness of the negative impact upon the Black community's "permanent interests" the key political and community establishment operatives will not be motivated to take sufficient corrective action so that the fate of Clayton County would be avoided. In fact some of these establishment figures will point to "racism" as the reasons why the SACS investigation and the school construction corruption investigation. The fact that a Black female district attorney who is a Democrat lead the investigation which lead to the 4 arrests is immaterial.
The misplaced pride in the "portraits that are hanging upon the wall" and the will to provide protection for that which they are proud of is allowed to dominate the movement to defend the indefensible.
I am NOT wishing harm on Dekalb County Georgia. I have plenty of friends who live in the county and only want the best for their children as they pursue a quality education.
I am ringing the alarm bells about the need for the Black rank and file to take control over the political operatives who purport to speak for their interests. Look at all of the financial, social and credibility losses that have been amassed in Clayton County over the past few years. For those who are most concerned about a "racial profile" and how it is used negatively against them there is at times a high level of unconsciousness regarding how a profile is crafted on a "drip by drip" basis.
Of course there are scandals in other governments. These other places also have a more proven history of being aware of the damage that festering dysfunction has upon their ultimate interests.
It is time for the people of Dekalb County to resolve that they will not allow their community's interests to collapse. They need to do a better job scrutinizing those who seek to represent them and do a better job managing them over the long haul.
