Core Values
Leftist
Progressive
Quasi-Socialist
I was motivated to make this demonstration as a means of communicating my observations taken from my many debates with certain people. It is clear to me that they frequently enshrine their own "Progressive/Leftist" core believes inside an "Artificially Flavored Coating of Blackness". Thus when I attack THEM and their views, telling them how ineffective or out of touch with the real world, I am said to be attacking "All Black People". In as much as they are more interested in providing cover for themselves than in debating our community issues in an above board manner - such an association works to pacify them for the moment.
Lampblack Leftism - A coating of "Blackness" upon a core set of leftist principles. The goal being to camouflage this core for the sake of refracting all scrutiny.
The close cousin of "Lampblack Leftism" is the term - "You can't hit a man with glasses"
In both cases the purveyor of these words hopes to tap into your sense of respect and dignity for the coating while he continues unbound to any particular set of principles beyond his core.
"Lampblack" is a term that I picked up from the great American journalist George S Schuyler upon reading his works. He described the "Black Activism" cultural movements in the 1920's and around the "Harlem Renaissance" as "lampblack". What was sold as "original or organically Black" was merely American cultural references that were given a "coat of coal soot" in order to dress it up as something other than what it actually is.
It is with this model as observed from the past that I see that much of which passes to day for "Authentically Black" political positions are merely "Lampblack Leftist" positions.
I am not attempting to wage an attack. My only purpose is to observe and then present the findings of my analysis.
Those who favor leftist political methodologies in the context of their intention of addressing the challenges that the Black community faces are merely coating what are otherwise "Leftist/Progressive" methodologies, the only distinction being that the BENEFITS are said to be directed toward the Black community. Thus the distinction from "National Progressive" or "Hispanic Progressive" dogma, for example, is the intended beneficiary, not the source methods.
My argument is that "Black Positions" (as Alabama Democratic party leader Joe Reed called them) are not born out as fact based on the POPULARITY of these positions among the Black masses. Instead "Authentically Black Positions" are proven based upon the EFFECTIVE RESULTS that they garner, as intended.
Failing to make the distinction between POPULARITY and EFFECTIVENESS means that our community will remain in an endless loop, always INTENDING to achieve our goals by "trying harder". The only entity that benefits is the Black Establishment which will build up a large and loyal following and, more importantly, the entity that they have agreed to do a perpetual "collabo" with as a means of building up a coalition with external forces, at this present time being the Democratic Party and other Progressive entities as seen in the "Leadership Conference On Civil Rights".
Ultimately they advance the cause of "Progressivism" with the theory being that as "Progressivism" is strengthened, so too is the cause of the Black Community.
I don't accept this theory. We only need to look out at our communities today to make note of this dispositive notion.
The Present Conditions Must Determine The Methodology Of Choice
As hard as it might be to believe - I do not have a fatal revulsion to "Progressivism"/ Leftism. Instead it is a methodology that needs to be applied at the appropriate time. I have said many times on this blog:
When you find yourself as a minority inside of a intolerant and intransigent environment which rolls over your interests - you had better link up with a 'progressive' movement that struggles to fundamentally change the character of the system so that your rights are retained.
However, as you become the curator of the key institutions that you have struggled to obtain your civic services through, you are now charged with fielding a system that works to the advantage of your people and interests - you had better make note of this change, construct a new system that can retain the standard of living, propagate the knowledge of this system that you desire among the people and then deploy "conservators" who will maintain this system and propagate respect for this system among the youth who will one day take over.
The goal is not to become a "conservative". Instead my interest is in having people to understand the relative position where they reside in their struggle.
To "struggle for the sake of struggling" is an excellent unifying tool for those who don't necessarily have the interest of actual solutions in mind. It fails to develop "organic competences" among the people to manage their own community level problems. As their victories in their struggles grow they will find themselves walking past the local seats of power that they used to protest against and seeking out their closest adversary to wage their new round of protests against. Its not good to piss off your "permanent friends" after all. With the masses so elated to see these favored individuals in office, they only visit the temple of government to view the portraits upon the wall that make them feel proud inside.
(Note: I had to wait till my wife left the house in order to execute this demonstration. I had to work the camera and the chocolate syrup all by myself. Had I asked my kids to assist me in pouring it on the light bulb they would have 'Snitched' on me to their mother and I would have been in a world of trouble still. No animals were harmed in this demonstration. The "BLAX News Network" will go to the ends of the Earth to provide coverage for the community. )

what the black community should be doing is to stay in school and learn something.do not condone teen pregnancy and stay out of trouble with the law and do not act like those jay walking jerks who have prior records.quit blaming whitey for all your self inflicted problems and start acting like real americans.run from the dole as it has ruined you.
Bruce:
Are you sure that this is a message that is unique to Black people?
For me - who is primarily focused upon applying "human resource management" processes to the Black Community - I don't have a problem with your statements as they are largely true.
As I look across the country at the massive problems that we face as a nation and a collection of individuals - there is not one of those bullet points on your list that aren't universally applicable.
Really interesting article. I believe that black people have as many different positions/opinions as anybody else, and like anybody else there's no limit to the number of contradictions or mismatched ideas that they can hold simultaneously. It's what makes humans so fun.
What really speaks to me in your piece is the idea that adherence to the Progressive Movement was a matter of calculated benefit, as was the alliance w/ Dems of the late 60s -70s. I like this idea, and your advice that they shed this affiliation -
I'm no fortune teller, but I truly believe that public policy & all that goes with it will very soon be the domain of Black people, Latino/Hispanic people, and especially women of all phenotypes. They will be the vanguard in public service as they are (and have always been) in so many other areas of American culture & society. Honestly, I can't wait.
But I came to your blog b/c of your use of the term Lampblack, and if I could humbly offer another possible description:
Lampblack (as you may well know) was the first material used to prove that sound could be recorded. Leon Scott came up w/ a device that you spoke into & it carved grooves in ash on a piece of paper. Rumor has it that he showed it to Abe Lincoln & some mystery recording of Abe is still floating around out there.
Maybe this lampblack that you suggest is covering a core of left politics will be brushed off, and used to record a new chapter of American history, led by those who really have the only good ideas left. White men sure got nothing anymore.
I don't see the rigidity that you suggest, but I seldom get into political arguments with anybody.
Anon:
I appreciate your comments.
Let me clarify my points
1) I believe that "conservative" or "liberal" are TOOLS that should be used relative to the position that "your group of people" (define the parameters how you will but it certainly is not just race) find themselves in the context of the greater society.
2) Those who remain "conservative" or "liberal" after they have "WON" and are the last man standing are more often than not merely ranting against shadows on the wall because they know no other means of operating. They do what they do best.
3) IF the leftist inclination of the Black Establishment was sufficiently developing competencies WITHIN our community I would be a LEFTIST at this point in my life.
4) The ultimate assault upon my intelligence, however is to see a machine that is aggregating POWER yet still blaming the issues that the children that were born under their tutelage upon their historical enemies. With no evidence that they plan to stop these antics and assume the role of the ESTABLISHMENT I am forced to execute my agenda of awareness.
I am striving for a TRANSPARENT system where my views are scrutinized with the same process that those who are my ideological adversaries are scrutinized. They who are the power and have extablishment control should have their faults dealt with more substantively because they have the means to influence the masses. (Isn't this the theory that 'hate crimes' are based upon'? Punishment because of the girth of the message upon the masses)
After studying their antics I realize that change is NOT going to come. They have found exploitable reference points that will keep them in power. RACISM being the primary vector.
I can ONLY show Black people our list of permanent interests and have them to make an honest assessment of where they stand with reference to them after decades of direction by this favorable force.
Some people desire unity behind this power and don't give a damn about what I say.
Others are "sick and tired of being sick and tired". If I can get a small percentage of them to STEAL MY MODEL and hold the people who they support accountable - I have done my job.
Thanks for responding w/ such thoughtfulness. You've got me thinking -
1)I agree 100% that conservative & liberal in the post-WWII West are categories whose definition is subject to class/gender/geography/culture as well as race. Probably 20x more factors too.
2)I agree - but would argue that historically this is a method used by those in power who find themselves in a state of decline/decadence - and they do this as a last ditch attempt to stay in power. I think it's a sure sign of weakness - a tell. I'm thinking witchtrials in the mid-to-late-Reformation, lynching in Reconstruction/Jim Crow South, plenty of modern-day examples too - Old guard Black leadership & Tea Partiers perhaps.
3)My favorite point of your response, and I think you're exactly right. Thank you. As a child of the South, I must say that I've seen the right-leaning inclinations of the Establishment also leave massive portions of the population way behind. Proof that individual effort makes all the difference. Nobody's gonna save anybody, anywhere, left or right. It's up to the person.
4) I completely agree. Victimhood as a way to achieve political-cultural power is like the worst passive aggression. It's pathetic. I find that many white folks try to do this as well, pretending to be oppressed by any number of demands that are placed on them. Awful whoever is doing it, whenever they are. As you say, it's insulting.
Transparency is crucial, and I believe that in our communication revolution transparency is becoming more and more of a reality. Not because what people say is more accurate, but because of the Enlighted belief of absolute Free Speech: The truth naturally wills out in a sea of lies. If you interfere w/ the free expression of ideas this process cannot work b/c everything gets obscured. But with the internet it seems pretty difficult to keep secrets these days.
I am not sure where I stand on the concept of Hate Crimes.
Change will not come through the Old Guard leadership of the Black community - the next generation already abandoned them in the late 80s, didn't they? I do believe that change will be delivered in the hands of the young, up-and-coming leadership of all political persuasions. I like the variety these days, and I hope it only grows stronger.
I think you're doing a great job. Like I said - you got me thinking.
