City Of Atlanta's Suspension Of Parking Enforcement Costs The Broke City $800

The City of Atlanta learns "There Is No Free Lunch".

$800,000!!
Despite the recent claim that there is a budget surplus of a few million dollars, the fact is that this amount was reached after massive job cuts and spending reductions. I just learned today about a department of the city has just announced the list of employees who would lose their jobs.

Almost 30 days ago Atlanta City Council voted to suspend the enforcement of parking fines by a 3rd party parking enforcement company.

It seems that they assumed that the public was going to continue paying their parking fees despite knowing that the "sheriff was out of town". While the Atlanta Police could still write parking tickets for violations - they have their hands full chasing after Street Pirates.

As a result of this freeze the city has lost $800,000 dollars.
Many in-town residents felt that the parking enforcement was too aggressive. Their cars were littered with tickets as they ran inside real quick without paying.

IF the city cancels the parking enforcement contract - they would be on the hook to pay millions more.

The city claims a $10M surplus yet the news indicated that yesterday they gave 300 employees pink slips.

Add this to the hundreds of other people that have been laid off over the past year.

I understand that they should do an 8am to 8pm parking district in certain downtown residential areas. They didn't need to suspend the enforcement for 30 days in the process of figuring this out.

In addition - as they rip out coin meters in favor of a parking machine (one box that accepts credit cards and dollar bills and each spot has a # that you can pay the machine with) they are ADDING coin meters in other areas. They need to invest in the updated machines which allow people to pay for parking for an extended period of time.
