The record shows that Rep Barbara Lee is no respecter of "diversity". Instead she seeks to advance her type of "diversity". If she had it her way that Black man who sat before her yet who "doesn't think the right way" would not be there. Instead a White male liberal who agrees with her is far more preferred per her agenda.
Ironically the issue of the lack of minority clerks in the Supreme Court is blamed upon Brother Justice Clarence Thomas' lack of support for "Affirmative Action" in the eyes of Ms Lee. The Supreme Court clerks are feed from the federal appellate courts. These courts recruit from law schools - Ivy League schools in particular.
The point that Ms Lee and others fail to note is that every law school student has matriculated from a high school, the vast majority of them being public schools. Ironically as the progressive movement seeks to insure that a handful of minority candidates are allowed to enter into the Ivy League schools who's inside connections expose those fortunate few (including the last 2 Presidents of the United States) into an exclusive set of opportunities - the cause of the "Wide Middle" of minorities who don't make it into the Ivy League has been functionally ignored.
Not only has there been few attempts to nullify the advantage of the exclusive Ivy League schools by mandating that governments stop favorably discriminating in preference for their graduates, mistakes are made on the front end. Why have an Affirmative Action protest to demand admissions of a handful of Black and minority students into these elitist halls when there remains hundreds of thousands of graduates each year who have been ill-prepared by their public schools to engage in the basic level of competitive exchange?
So often I get rhetorically asked "So are you demanding that Black people get our own act together before making demands upon 'the system'?". In this SPECIFIC case the answer is yes.
If there was a sustained effort to improve the educational quality of all public schools, raising the performance of all minority students by 2 standard deviations - this act alone would insure that a far larger quantity of students of color would be knocking on the door of these elite law schools, drastically increasing the chances that more will be admitted.
Rep Lee and others prefer that the "system" make accommodations rather than having the conscious people within the community begin to align their day to day actions with their long term goals, removing as many distractions as possible.
Justice Clarance Thomas has done far less damage toward this cause than has the aggregate machine that controls so many of these institutions which are failing us.
From The Article
At one point, Thomas became involved in a tense exchange with Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), who pressed the justice on the lack of diversity among the Supreme Court’s prestigious clerkships.
Lee, the chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, asked if the court had made any effort to attract clerks from minority groups and particularly from law schools outside of the Ivy League. Thomas responded that while he looks for clerks from a wide range of schools, the justices start from a pool of candidates that have clerked for other federal appellate courts.
Within that pool, Thomas said, “Hispanics and blacks do not show up in any great numbers.”
When Lee asked how the justices could increase the pool, Thomas demurred. “I don’t think it’s up to us to increase the pool,” he said.
The answer did not satisfy Lee, who brought up Thomas’s votes against affirmative action during his time on the bench.
“What’s in the pool has to do unfortunately with some of your decisions on the Supreme Court that have really shut out any people of color in some of these institutions,” she said. Thomas did not respond directly, but he voiced support for having a staff that reflected a broad range of experiences and regions.
