In response to some very misleading stats provided on another blog - here are the facts about Blacks in the Foster Care System of New York City.

The numbers of Black children in the system is quite disturbing.
White 44.1% (35.1% were non-Hispanic whites)
Blacks 25.2% (23.7% were non-Hispanic blacks)
Asian Americans 11.6%
American Indians 0.4%
Pacific Islander Americans 0.1%
Hispanics and Latinos made up 27.4% of New York City's population
What about the Black population makes us more likely to enter the ranks of foster care? Certainly the poverty profile between Blacks and Non-White Hispanics are comparable. The person on the other blog who initiated this conversation did so to slander Black people. (He claimed that there were 40,000 Blacks in foster care. Clearly inaccurate.).
I choose not to run away from the issue for fear of being called a "self-hater". This is merely a defense mechanism used by people who don't wish to apply the necessary management infrastructure to address the problem. Unfortunately the statistics do not mention the reason for the transfer into the foster care system.
Two of my relatives are foster care parents. Using them as a reference the situation typically involves a tenuous relationship between mother and father, typically involving violence. The state agency fears for the safety of the child in the environment as the mother's situation is not stable. The children are removed until the mother meets a series of mandates imposed upon her by the family court judge.
