NY Daily News: Haitian immigrants in New York waiting, hoping for best following devastating earthquake in Haiti Read more
If there is any nation in this world who can't catch a break it is the nation of Haiti.
The recent 7.0 earthquake merely strikes a nation that was already on its knees once more for good measure it seems. The present state of the nation which has few building codes that are enforced and where desperation has stripped the land of much of its vegetation to stop mud-slides leaves the people more vulnerable to any disaster - natural or man-made.
I have called a few of my Jamaican friends and challenged them to "help their brothers as if the disaster had struck on their home island". There needs to be a two phase strategy. First to stop the immediate bleeding. More permanently - there is a need to address the systematic issues which up-end the progress of the nation, leaving it grovelling from one crisis to the next.
