Alleged Excessive Use Of Force By The Police In Pittsburgh

CNN: Brutality charged as Pittsburgh police defend 'fist strikes' on teen

This incident smells of excessive force by the police. (No - no one has hacked into my account and posted this.)

It sounds like the police made a bunch of assumptions about this young man and then chased after him with the plans of proving that he is innocent after the fact.

The question that asks "Did the police do a sufficient job in identifying themselves prior to the 'suspect' running away" is always a major point of debate.

The police would say: "He ran after we clearly identified ourselves as police thus he must have had something to hide"

The abused suspect would say: "I saw there plain clothes males jump out of their car and run after me - so I ran away."

The question of if this heightened level of physical interaction was necessary to subdue the suspect is yet another point of friction. Real life is no "cops and robbers show". Sometimes the "suspect" is in fact innocent and the police do misinterpret the situation.

In any event I hope that the community activists and the police command staff don't allow this incident to be exploited beyond the point of benefit for either side. They both must assure each other that they are working for the same thing - a safe, drug free community where people walk the streets without fear of attack.
