The Primary Care Physican Shortage: The Damage From Consumer-Focused Consciousness

Doctor shortage: Who should fill it?

The U.S. health care system is struggling with a shortage of primary care physicians. CNNMoney.com asked readers -- especially those who are medical professionals -- to weigh in on who can help solve the problem. Here are some responses:

If there was ever a stronger need to change "Social Justice" strategy for the provision of health care to the Black Community I have not seen it.

With the current shortage of and future gross shortage of Primary Care Physicians in America why is it that the main cry today is for the "Public Option" rather than calling for public money to educate scores of new African American students with a high level of potential, sculpting them into "Primary Care Physicians" so that more people in our community can have access to this knowledge and services rendered?

No this strategy does not address expensive drugs and the expense of a long hospital stays. At the same time health care outcomes are not only about drugs and hospitals.
Diabetes, Obesity, and a host of other issues are largely lifestyle diseases.

It is my opinion that there is a major missed opportunity going on right before our eyes.

Couple this with the fact that the mounting federal debt is going to significantly impact our this nation's central government to provide the service that people are looking for it to deliver in the long run (20 to 40 years). It only makes sense that we take full advantage of this opportunity to distribute these competencies to the periphery. It will still be the case 40 years from now that 'they can't ever take education away from you' regardless of the fiscal state of this nation.
