David Bing, Mayor Of Detroit Proposes Tough Medicine For The City

I have always liked David Bing. I think that he is an honorable man. I hope and pray that he will lead the city through this tumultuous time.

I hope that he sets such a high standard of integrity and competence that the people of Detroit will NEVER look back and choose the type of elected officials that they did in the past.

Detroit needs tough medicine, not bankruptcy

On the heels of his 100th day in office, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has made it clear that he, unlike some of the city's corporate and municipal inhabitants, isn't willing to put Motown into Chapter 9 bankruptcy despite a $300 million deficit.

Once a star guard with the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association, Bing, who replaced disgraced former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick in May, reportedly said on the eve of his milestone Wednesday that his city wouldn't file for either or receivership.

Now Bing is arguing that his office should be put in control of the Detroit Public School System, which has also been suffering from more than just financial troubles. On Aug. 12, a prosecutor charged five DPS employees for unauthorized payroll transactions, and the size of the fraud hangs in the tens of millions, according The Wall Street Journal.

And Bing, who is receiving no salary as mayor, isn't just calling for accountability from Detroit's public workers. As he begins discussions on a potential downsizing of the government, he's also telling those who may be on the chopping block not to expect their jobs back should Detroit rebound.

He said:

"People who think that their jobs ought to be protected are unrealistic. ... Our world is changing. This city has changed. ... Who ever would have thought that two of the largest corporations in the world would file for bankruptcy? And what did they do? They closed plants. They got rid of people. ... They did all kinds of things to survive. What makes our folks in this city think that we don't have to do that?"
