This is the first edition of a new series that I will be publishing.
The origin of the name "The Dr Mary Francis Berry Environmental Thugism Walking Tour Within The Black Community" stems from two sources.
First it is an acknowledgement of the effective use of the "Environmental Racism Tour" used to highlight the negative and deadly impact that chemical and industrial pollution is having on "communities of color". The activists did not simply sit back and complain. The rented a bus and took all non-believers on a tour, showing the sites and allowing them to make their own conclusion based on the irrefutable evidence.
Secondly this is in response to a recent C-SPAN interview that I saw with Dr Mary Francis Berry. Dr Berry is the former head of the "US Commission On Civil Rights" and prior to that a controverisal leader of "The Pacifica Network", a left leaning media organization that appears on many alternative news sources.
During the interview on C-SPAN I was admittedly drawn into the story that Ms Berry told about a Black man who was doing nothing more "illegal" than walking in Alabama on the side of the road, minding his own business. Then a carload of White racists pulled up on him and shot him in the back. Dr Berry used this story to tell of the gross brutality that was suffered by Black people at the time in this country where "A Black man had no rights that a White man need respect". I was angered by these actions of the White racists. They had no respect for this man. Nothing more than his color promoted him as a candidate for their target practice.
When the interview ended I sat back and thought about how fortunate I am to live today with a significantly loweredthreat of being shot in the back by a White racist. As I continued to ponder these circumstances I got disturbed about today.
You see where as Dr Berry rightfully talks about the brutality of the past, she is a bit more reluctant to make note that today - BLACK PEOPLE ARE STILL GETTING SHOT IN THE BACK WITH AN UNACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF FREQUENCY. The most substantial thing that has changed is that their assailants are less frequently WHITE FOLKS!.
Today Black Thugs are indiscriminately shooting and killing Black people. No longer is it skin color that triggers this action - it is the combination of "gang colors" and skin color.
The most frustrating part of the entire situation is that the race of the assailant renders Dr Mary Francis Berry and other Civil Rights operatives IMPOTENT in addressing the situation. They are conflicted between the desire to reduce violence & have justice for Black people AND the knowledge that when they demand that the police "Do Something!" they will run awry of their "Too Many Black People In Jail" mantra. Thus in their relative silence - Black people will continue to be assaulted.
