Fight Between Georgia House and Senate Republicans About Transportation Spending Is Irresponsible

MARTA begs state leaders to avert ‘calamity’

The Republicans in Georgia have no one else but themselves to blame. After years of being dominated by the Democrats - they now have control of the state house, senate and governors office. Yet another year has passed and they remain gridlocked over transportation spending.

The same ole story is about money for Metro Atlanta versus the rest of the state. He House Republicans seek to have a state wide sales tax where the money collected can be distributed more equally to those parts of the state that don't generate as much money (hey these Republicans sound a lot like Democrats).

The Senate seeks to have regional funding where, for example the Atlanta area which is suffering most from congestion would raise its own money and apply its own fixes. To be consistent - several prominent Black senators support the "use our own money as we see fit rather than share it" stance.

In the circular gun battle between the Republicans - MARTA is left with a funding shortfall as the legislature left town for the year having been deadlocked over the transporation issue of which MARTA is a part of.

If the Democrats scratch out control over the governors office or one of the legislative bodies - it will be because of the lack of vision coming from the Republican party which has two factions - Metro Atlanta vs Rural with each sticking to its guns.

I give credit to the state as it will punish the party which fails to get its act together. South Dekalb County and Clayton could only hope for the same open mindedness toward their permanent interests.
