Nora Trimble has visited her deceased husband’s workplace — the Clayton County courthouse — eight times in the past 19 months.
Each time she answered a subpoena, she was turned away because of court scheduling problems or other excuses, the widow said.
Trimble has been waiting a year and half to see justice for the student accused of killing her husband in a traffic collision.
She may have to wait longer. A backlog of misdemeanor cases and a shortage of judges have delayed justice for thousands of people, said the four Clayton State Court judges.
“We are handling cases, but we are not doing justice sometimes because we are covered up,” State Court Judge Linda Cowen said. “Because of that press of business, it is almost impossible to get all the information in that case. You don’t have time to negotiate a plea or take sufficient time to look at a sentence imposed.”
A study conducted by the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts shows the Clayton County State Court’s four judges handle the work of 9.47 judges.
The court is asking for a fifth judge to be added July 1 to help with some of the caseload. The addition, which would cost nearly $700,000, must be approved by the Clayton County Commission and the Legislature. The commission will vote Tuesday.
Another week, another "glowing" report about Clayton County, Georgia.
It appears that "now that WE run thangs" proved to be a bit harder than they thought 8 years ago or so. In fact it would be accurate to say that this phrase is the "Mission Accomplished" of the new Black Democratic regime that now runs Clayton. Again I should note that the old regime consisted of White Democrats. So there was not a change in party but a change in priorities and "seasoning" of the agenda.
With the bench at the county court house being short it seems that the 4 judges are doing the work of 9 and some change. If you are a criminal who is out of jail on bond - this means more free time on the streets. If you are locked up and waiting for a trial it is possible that you can spend more time in jail and not have a speedy trial. But I am not talking about the criminals. I will leave this for activists such as the NAACP to handle. These two points fall on their side of the equation.
Let's talk about the VICTIMS OF CRIMES and how they fare. For the VICTIMS OF CRIME who have a legal proceeding in Clayton County this means that your JUSTICE has been given a forbearance because the court system is backlogged.
I bring up AJC Editorial Publisher Cynthia Tucker because it is appropriate in this particular context. I operate on the theory that certain operatives expose themselves for who they are NOT in what they are most vocal about in pursuit of "justice and the advancement of the interests of those on the margins of society". Instead one only need to look at what they allow to go on right under their noses and SAY NOTHING because in saying something they'd be going against a "Permanent Friend" in pursuit of "Permanent Interests".
Today rings in the month of March. The Georgia General Assembly is in session. In as much as it is currently dominated by Republican Legislators and a Republican governor will will shortly see Ms Tucker interrupt her "President Obama Press Secretary" duties and wage an attack on the state Republicans. Now keep in mind that she hasn't limited herself to state and national politics and the impact on Black people previously. She has had commentary over her conflicts with former Dekalb CEO Vernon Jones - yes he is a "Democrat" but he is a self professed "Conservative Democrat". Do you see a pattern here?
Clayton County has harmed the interests of its student body last year. During that time and spilling into this year there have been legislative conflict - I am talking personal and not just "legislative" as in bills under consideration. The police and sheriff's office have been in the news constantly and now we see this story on the court system. Yet as a frequent reader of Cynthia Tucker's columns I can only recall one story on the subject of the fiasco going on in Clayton County. This was a story about this time last year. Ms Tucker buttressed the story first by attacking state Republicans and then commenting about Clayton County. I believe that the general theme of the story was "political incompetence".
I wonder when Clayton County will receive specific focus by Ms Tucker?
I wonder when the NAACP will protest that the backlogged justice system in Clayton County translates into JUSTICE DENIED for the VICTIMS who's assailants have yet to go before a judge and receive their just penalty.
The NAACP and Cynthia Tucker largely operate upon the principles of "Justice Thurgood Marshall Justice". They are silent until a CRIMINAL DEFENDANT is made into a VICTIM of the court system as the SYSTEM does something that is procedurally counter to justice. If only both of these operatives could be made to take up the cause of the "CRIMINAL'S VICTIM" and make note that their friends in high places in Clayton county, the elected Democrats are suppressing justice.
There is a new target for "Speak Truth To Power" yet certain biased operatives appear to have laryngitis.
