Sometimes I just don't understand the strategy used by certain people and entities.
Various Republican officials and/or talk show hosts are slamming Tom Daschle for his million dollar salaries received from health care concerns. Some of these entities were those he would have to regulate had he continued on with his HHS position.
When you step back and note the political alliances between the parties and ideologies it is far more likely that the Republicans have people who came from industry. The Democrats have a larger set of people who have come from the activist community.
Why then would the Republicans seek to launch an attack on a guy who left politics and became an industry insider? They are sounding like Democrats in their attacks.
As for me - I would prefer to see a balance of both "industry insiders" and "industry critics" in government - with a slight majority to the insiders. In conflict a certain check and balance would be expressed.
Where as the Republicans are seeking to prove HYPOCRISY in truth all they are doing is making it tougher on their future nominees. If the Republicans had any sense they would say:
"The actions by former Minority Leader Tom Daschle, a loyal Democrat, proves beyond a doubt that there is value to be obtained by making use of a knowledgeable individual who can provide guidance to a service firm seeking to provide valuable services to their own clients, while seeking to stay within the confines of government policy and or work to change them where they see necessary. We support the efforts of Senator Daschle in his work within the industry. We can't support his tax avoidance record though".
That's it.
The Republicans are acting something akin to the Democrats in regards to their attacks on their enemies as they occupy the seat while going on defense against their friends while they are in the seat. Both are equally short sighted.
