Mississippi now has highest teen birth rate
New CDC report finds significant increases in 26 states
ATLANTA - Mississippi now has the nation’s highest teen birth rate, displacing Texas and New Mexico for that lamentable title, a new federal report says.
Mississippi’s rate was more than 60 percent higher than the national average in 2006, according to new state statistics released Wednesday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The teen birth rate for that year in Texas and New Mexico was more than 50 percent higher.
The three states have large proportions of black and Hispanic teenagers — groups that traditionally have higher birth rates, experts noted.
The lowest teen birth rates continue to be in New England, where three states have rates at roughly half the national average, which is 42 births per 1,000 teen women.
Statistical blip?
It’s not clear why Mississippi, with 68 births per 1,000, surged into first place. The state’s one-year increase of nearly 1,000 teen births could be a statistical blip, said Ron Cossman, a Mississippi State University researcher who focuses on children’s health statistics.
The New Mexico rate was 64 per 1,000; Texas was 63. New Hampshire, with a rate of 19 per 1,000, was the nation’s lowest.
More than a year ago, a preliminary report on the 2006 data revealed that the U.S. teen birth rate had risen for the first time in about 15 years. But the new numbers provide the first state-by-state breakdown.
The new report is based on a review of all the birth certificates in 2006. Significant increases in teen birth rates were noted in 26 states.
“It’s pretty much across the board” nationally, said Brady Hamilton, a CDC statistician who worked on the report.
About 435,000 of the nation’s 4.3 million births in 2006 were to mothers ages 15 through 19. That was about 21,000 more teen births than in 2005.
Numerically, the largest increases were in the states with the largest populations. California, Texas and Florida together generated almost 30 percent of the nation’s extra teen births in 2006.
Blaming abstinence-only education
Some experts have blamed the national increase on increased federal funding for abstinence-only health education that does not teach teens how to use condoms and other contraception. They said that would explain why teen birth rate increases have been detected across much of the country and not just in a few spots.
There is debate about that, however. Some conservative organizations have argued that contraceptive-focused sex education is still common, and that the new teen birth numbers reflect it is failing.
Other factors include the escalating cost of some types of birth control and their unavailability in some communities, said Stephanie Birch, who directs maternal and child health programs for the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services.
Glowing media portrayals of celebrity pregnancies don’t help, either, she said. “They make it out to be very glamorous,” said Birch, who cited a calculation by Alaska officials that teen births were up 6 percent in that state in 2006.
My analysis of this issue will not, in fact, be about "this issue". Instead I would like to bring back the words of the great Malcolm X:
The white liberal differs from the white conservative only in one way: the liberal is more deceitful than the conservative. The liberal is more hypocritical than the conservative.
Both want power, but the white liberal is the one who has perfected the art of posing as the Negro's friend and benefactor; and by winning the friendship, allegiance, and support of the Negro, the white liberal is able to use the Negro as a pawn or tool in this political "football game" that is constantly raging between the white liberals and white conservatives.
Politically the American Negro is nothing but a football and the white liberals control this mentally dead ball through tricks of tokenism: false promises of integration and civil rights. In this profitable game of deceiving and exploiting the politics of the American Negro, those white liberals have the willing cooperation of the Negro civil rights leaders. These "leaders" sell out our people for just a few crumbs of token recognition and token gains. These "leaders" are satisfied with token victories and token progress because they themselves are nothing but token leaders.
Now let us understand the importance of this in regards to two critical debates at hand in America and Black America:
- The fight over Red State/ Blue State policies
- The fight over Reproductive Polices
If you listen to Progressive-Fundamentalists - both White and Black equally so - you will begin to notice a pattern amongst them. They are happy to public negative statistics about "poor, uneducated, immoral people"......as long as it is published at the STATE or NATIONAL level and thus is duly placed as the fault of their ideological enemies - the Conservative.
The "Red States" and "America" are their favorite targets.
You see the information in the article above which showcases that Mississippi a "Deep South" state has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the nation this affords the Progressive to go to work in launching an attack on this "conservative state". As you see in this article the authors and editors at MSNBC would consider the report incomplete if they failed to mention "Abstinence Only" education as the reason for this increase. Anyone following this blog will note that I have previously debunked this claim. But more on this point later.
One thing that one cannot miss from their antics is their unwillingness to do a ZIPCODE level review of their claims against "bastions of conservatism". If they did do so they would note that in these "Red States" the wealthier and Whiter zipcodes look little different than do the White zipcodes of their idealized references in the Northeastern United States.
The bigotry of the White Liberal is understandable.
What I can't understand is how easily the Black Quasi-Socialist Progressive-Fundamentalist Racism Chaser follows along failing to make note that he has a big "Wilson" brand mark sizzled upon his buttocks and white shoelaces on his front size, being carried down the field by his sponsor.
The BQPFRC believe that when his White Liberal sponsor is talking about "Those Red State People" that they are in effect pointing to the MINORITIES who are bringing down the numbers - NOT THE WHITE FOLKS!!!
I have pointed to this same phenomenon with respect to liberal education activist Jonathan Kozol. He makes hearty attacks on No Child Left Behind when he is effectively make using of "ignorant Black kids" as his poster children. Kozol claimed that he had followed a 3rd grade class full of Black kids as they became NCLB guinea pigs though to the 7th grade. At the 7th grade he made the case that they were not able to hold an INTELLIGENT conversation with the teacher. He blamed NCLB because it had robbed the teacher of her bonding time used to nurture them into being able to speak in public.
Again I am not blaming Jonathan Kozol. I put my blame squarely upon the BLACK FOLKS who "assume the position" for Kozol if this is what it takes to receive RESOURCES from the government. These people are more interested in BEING IN RECEIPT OF BENEFIT than they are in considering the dignity that is lost as they "tape a tail upon their backside and then run through the segregated officers quarter" so the someone can win a bet that Blacks indeed have tails.
SHAME ON YOU ALL!!!
The reason why the states on the list have a high rate of teenage pregnancy is because the prevailing culture to which these minority children are bound to does not see this as a PROBLEM. Thus they have not done anything to manage a different outcome. The teen pregnancy rate thus is not an "offense" to the people in question. It is only of concern to those outsiders who are looking in and noting a pattern.
