U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton was lauded as a champion of social and racial justice at the King Center’s “Salute to Greatness” dinner Saturday in Atlanta.
The New York Democrat and U.S. secretary of state-designate was among the featured guests at the civil right’s center major fund-raiser, held at the Hyatt Regency.
The banquet is one of a number of weekend events honoring the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Monday is a federal holiday given over to remembrances of the civil rights icon, who was assassinated in 1968.
“It’s not just remembering and celebrating; we must also act,” Clinton told the audience of 1,000 people. “Until every vote is counted and every American has health insurance and jobs, then it is up to all of us. As we commemorate MLK Day, we are called upon to treat this day as a day of service. We all have a part to play.”
Isaac Farris Jr., president of the King Center, lauded Clinton for her leadership, humanitarianism and “as a champion of needed social reforms.”
“Sen. Clinton has worked tirelessly throughout her career to advance racial justice, child welfare and health security for all Americans and human rights worldwide,” Farris said in prepared remarks.
- Nobel Peace Prize
- The Academy Awards (The Oscars)
- The NAACP Image Award
They don't go necessarily to the people who are absolutely deserving of such an award. Instead they go to the people who are POPULARLY IDENTIFIED as being deserving of the award in reference to the concurrence of those who sit in judgment.
In as much as these organizations that bestow these awards have a progressive bias in their membership and charter - those receiving these awards will have done something that was favorable to the progressives who sit in judgment of their character and worth.
I have no problem with a group of people congregating, crafting an award and then presenting it to whomever they want to. Really I don't.
I have a problem when people make use of this award in future arguments, using it as some sort of certification of this person's qualifications in that regard.
These awards, just as with various "Legislative Report Cards" simply define a model of what the "report card granting" organization believes is a model legislator and they are graded accordingly. As such the same progressives who score high in the NAACP's judgment often get "F" on the National Rifle Association and the Chamber of Commerce report card.
More than inspecting the grade point average on various report cards, we must focus on the underlying societal mission that these people purport to seek to accomplish. Thus it is time that society "grade the graders".
When it comes to the protection of civil rights WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY in 2009 - the Civil Rights Establishment gets a "B" - not as in a grade "B" which is better than a "C" but not quite an "A". They get a "B" for "Bigotry". The primary threat to the Civil Rights of Black people in 2009 is a Black Thug who is killing us, assaulting us and conducting witness intimidation.
This establishment is failing miserably to bring this to the forefront in the name of protecting our people.
